The Kent area is situated in the Southeast of England near the Channel .It is characterised by orchards and hopfields. Kent was for a one time considered as the garden of England and a land for sheep in the Downs.

In the year 55 AC Jutes and Saxons occupied the region and founded the kingdom of Kent, one of the 7 kingdoms of English Saxon Britain.  

In 1066 William the Conqueror, the Norman, invaded Britain ; the famous battle took place in Hastings .

Because of its situation , the County of Kent played an important role during the war 1944/1945 . It was nicknamed the « Bomb Alley »

Today Kent is an English County.

The most important cities and towns of South-East England:

Dover: the most active harbour of Great Britain. Nowadays Dover is connected to the continent through to the Channel tunnel. In Dover there are also some factories.
The Dover castle is situated on the cliffs and dominates the town. The place is 4000years old.
After the Norman Conquest Dover was one of the five harbours allowing the arrival in Great Britain.
Dover suffered a lot during the World War II. Its population is estimated at about 36,000 inhabitants.

Brighton: this seaside resort is a very beautiful town, with an historical past, with parks and pleasant squares. In this town you can find many museums and other interesting buildings.
The town developed rapidly in the early century owing to the railway. Its population is estimated at about 130,000 inhabitants.

Canterbury: situated i on the river Stour , it is famous for its cathedral which was an important place for the Pilgrims from the Middle-Age. Canterbury is mostly a tourist town. The cathedral was built in the 7th century and is well known because of the murder of the Archbishop Becket in 1170. Henry 8th took all the treasure of the cathedral in 1538. The  population of Canterbury is estimated at about 132,000 inhabitants

Rochester: well-known for its factories, its cathedral and its castle. Charles Dickens comes from the neighbourhood . 
Its population is estimated at about 300,000 inhabitants.
